Developing young driver talent

The FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy is a programme founded by the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety and Sustainability to develop young driver talent worldwide. The Motorsport Academy takes place at a number of workshops held throughout the year at various locations, and it is overseen by former World rally Champion Co-Driver Robert Reid and Two-time Le Mans Champion and former F1 driver Alex Wurz.

Motorsport Academy Graduates

The Academy will select its 4th class of young drivers in late 2014 for training through 2015. Previous Motorsport Academy graduates include current WRC drivers Andreas Mikkelson, Craig Breen and Pontus Tidemand, as well asStoffel Vandoorne, Alexander Rossi and Robin Frijns, who all currently race in the GP2 series in addition to being F1 reserve drivers. In 2012, the ATCUAE successfully nominate young Emirati Mohammed Al Mutawaa to the Academy, where he became the first Arab driver accepted onto the programme, and has since gone on to compete in both the Middle East and World Rally Championships.

Regional selection event

Following a reorganisation of the Academy structure in 2013, the MKI was appointed by the FIA Institute to organise and run the regional selection event, and identify a driver from the Middle East, Mediterranean and North Africa Region to progress through to the Academy, with Saudi driver Abdullah Bamogaddam coming out on top after a three day test at Yas Marina Circuit in September 2013.

Following the success of 2013, the MKI has again been appointed by the FIA Institute to host the regional selection event for the 2014-15 Academy, with the event scheduled for Yas Marina Circuit from Sunday 28th September until Wednesday 1st October 2014.
